PGN Inc is a commercial company, the makers of the excellent OpenCanvas commercial paint program and the competent MangaLabo/ComiLabo commercial cartooning/manga-making program (I suspect the original FireAlpaca release was partly based on these programs). Now they have an option :) The Steam cost will compensate for the loss of sponsorship by advertisers in the Steam version. I have seen (in a few different places) people ask how to get rid of this startup ad, and one person had FireAlpaca lock up every time that ad window appeared. When you start FireAlpaca, there is a popup ad window (often with Japanese ads) which also checks whether you have the latest version.
